Back in 2006 when Sony launched a $600 piece of hardware with no dual shock support and a limited supply of consoles to boot it was hard to sing their praises. But hey I went along then and two gens later I have their latest but I’ll be honest I have three reasons why I LOVE the PS3 MORE than my PS5, bar none.
#3 –> COST
Gaming today is rough, it’s expensive and almost every single title has some kind of DLC. $69.99 is the main cost but if you want the super duper balls to the wall don’t lose sleep over not being part of the experience experience better get that season pass for the low price of $19.99 or more. I get it, making a AAA game is a huge investment and the companies need to recoup what they sink in but with bills and life it’s hard to keep shelling out the money. So what do I do? I four pay like no other, but why do we need to? Especially when GameStop offers 4 for $10 deals on oldies but goodies… schwing!!!
#2 –>BATTERY LIFE
This might sound crazy but I love that my Dual Shock 3 can go for up to 30 hours on one charge. Is it necessary??? No! I’m 38 with kids, I’m lucky if I game for an hour at night but I’d rather not have to worry about grabbing a charging cord when everyone goes to bed. Meanwhile the DualSense gets a teeny tiny 6 to 12 hours of life, depending on use. To me it’s nuts that we added extra features to a versatile set up only to cut the battery power by at least a third if not more. I’m calling that downright lame!
#1 –> THE GAMES
Now here’s the real meat and potatoes of my argument some of the best titles to ever grace any console came out on the PlayStation 3. Many of them have been ported through the different generations while the original experience can be nabbed for $10 dollars or less. Heck just look at The Last of Us. It’s been re-released and remastered on the PS4, now the PS5 but you can get it on the PS3 for $5 or less. It’s a steal. Not to mention Call of Duty was at its best at this time, GTA V is a PS3 original. Going deeper you have games locked to the system i.e. Heavenly Sword, The Darkness, Batman: Arkham Origins etc.
You can get the first three Uncharted games, most if not all, will be under $10 a piece. You can grab Game of the Year editions of games so that when, not if, that PlayStation Store goes dark you’ll still have access to the DLC because it’s on the disc. Physical media… what a concept! You have the first two Infamous games, Resistance trilogy, stellar ports of Ps2 classics like Sly Cooper or Jak and Daxter.
ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED???
Let’s be honest it’s not the best moment to be a Sony fan. So during these uncertain times, pull up a chair, dust off your old controller and experience the glory that is the seventh generation of gaming. Because it’s easy to love the PS3 more than the PS5 in 2026 since it’s inexpensive and ready to go… “Long Live Play.”
