Well holy $4!7!!! Sony ends Physical Media in 2028. I’ve been a life long gamer and to lose the ability to have the option to buy physical leaves a bad taste in my mouth, But here we are, this is happening.
…physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only. This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.

I’m not against digital by any stretch but I liked having the option and being a parent with a budget getting to decide to buy new, used or digital just has been a saving grace that helped me to keep gaming. And not for nothing what really separates console and PC now??? The PS6 will be the first system from Sony that’s not pushing some kind of physical media tech (see DVD, Blu-Ray and UMD).
Are you okay with paying for permission to play a game? Because that’s what we’re doing. I know this ship sailed a long time ago, and we welcomed the vampires in, the moment we each purchased outside of a retail store but it still feels icky. I don’t know how else to describe it other than I’m let down by all this but this is only part one of what Sony did, part two to me is just as bad if not worse but oh lord here we go.
My response to all this is simple, time to start buying retro and physical media. But what do you think?
Is this a smart move for Sony? Are they guaranteeing their success in the next gen? Or are they doomed?
