Joëlle Jones takes the reader on a briskly paced narrative the focuses on setting the stage for a bigger saga. It’s atmospheric from the first page to the final panel, with a distinct tone that feels like a welcome start for new or curious readers. It’s a solid script meant for someone who’s about to make a splash on a greater world. Now you may find yourself with a bit of whiplash from how fast the story goes. It might also be disappointing that there are no fisticuffs but within this #1 is a worthy addition to the greater Amazon world that does more right than it does wrong so… trust the process, you’ll like it!
At the end of the day the text does what it needs to do to keep you flipping from page to page but its the art by Joëlle Jones that to me raises the quality of the book. Each scene, whether it’s just a random lady on a plane who’s a bit annoyed by our oversharing heroine or a bus driver attempting to flirt with her are stellar. The panels are bold and convincingly near prefect, even though the story is talky talky with no fighty fighty! It’s the reason that five years later I’m sitting here writing a review from a copy that was tucked in my own collection! It’s a comic full of expressive moments with colors by Jordie Bellaire.
Wonder Girl (Vol 3) #1 is a tight start that knows where its going even if we do not. Could things have slowed down for exposition? Sure! But you know what??? This is still a top tier intro thrown together with all the promise and dynamic flair to give Yara Flor the opening she deserved. Recommended.
